UVa Health System, Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology seeks: Women and men ages 18 and older with untreated metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum for research study.
The purpose of the study is to understand whether one of the following two combinations cetuximab plus chemotherapy, or cetuximab plus bevacizumab plus chemotherapy, is better than the combination of bevacizumab with chemotherapy in patients who do not have K-ras mutations in their tumor tissue. The study involves taking an experimental medicine, blood draws, physical exams, lab tests, CAT scans or MRI scans, and chest x rays. Each visit will last 1 to 3 hours. Visits occur once every 1 or 2 weeks dependent upon which chemotherapy agent is prescribed. The total treatment period for the study is at least 16 weeks. You would be treated with this regimen of chemotherapy unless your cancer begins to grow, you become too sick to receive the therapy, your doctor believes another treatment is appropriate, or you no longer wish to continue with the study. Your medical condition is followed for 5 years after treatments.
Study-related experimental medication is provided free of charge. However, if cetuximab becomes commercially available for this indication, there is a possibility you may be asked to purchase supplies and personnel costs of giving you the medicine.
Participant's insurance company will be billed for non-experimental medication, tests and procedures.
No compensation is provided for this study.
