UVa’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers expertise in several specialties, including hand surgery, spine surgery, total joint replacement and sports injuries. Faculty are recognized for their contribution to medicine by America’s Top Doctors in Orthopaedic Surgery by Castle Connolly and Institute of Medicine of the National Academies. UVa’s Sports Medicine programs and the UVa Hand Center are among the most comprehensive in the region.

Innovation

Leading-edge medical innovations in UVa Orthopaedic Surgery include computer-aided surgery, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery as well as minimally invasive hip and knee replacements and lumbar spine artificial disc replacements. The department is also active in orthopaedic regeneration research, working to develop synthetic alternatives to orthopaedic tissues such as bone, ligament, and cartilage.
