Clinical Career Ladder Panels

Panel Member Training

All panel members are required to attend a training session, coordinated by the Panel Chair, prior to serving on a panel.   Each panel member is required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

About the Central Panel

The Central Career Ladder Panel is responsible for the advancement of Clinician IVs, APN Is and APN IIs. It is also responsible for the central revalidation process of Clinician IVs and APNs.  It is empowered by the Nursing Cabinet and Chief Clinical Officer.    

Central Panel Chair and Co-Chair: The Central Panel Chair and Co-Chair are always clinicians, selected by the Executive Nursing Cabinet. The Co-Chair serves on the Central Panel for one year, then oversees the Clinician III Panels on January 1st of the following year, while the Chair oversees the Central Panel and the entire Clinical Ladder operation.   The Co-Chair then assumes the role of Chair in the third year.

Central Panel composition: Central Panel membership consists of the following, all of whom are appointed by the Nursing Executive Cabinet:

  • 2 School of Nursing representatives, one of whom is the Dean and is a permanent member
  • 1 Medical Center Administrator
  • 2 Medical Center Managers
  • 1 Clinician APN II (at least 2 APNs must be NP-prepared, may either be APN I or II)
  • 3 APN Is
  • 3 Clinician IVs
  • the President-Elect of the Nursing Staff, if he/she has not previously served on the Central Panel
  • 1 Administrative support staff.

Members serve a minimum of a 2-year term, with no more than half the membership rotating off at one time.

About the Clinician III Panels

Eight Clinician III Career Ladder Advancement Panels are responsible for the advancement process of Clinician IIs to IIIs. These Panels are empowered by the Nursing Cabinet and the Chief Clinical Officer.       

Clinician III Panel composition:

  • 1 Chair - a Clinician IV, APN I or APN II, appointed by the Nursing Cabinet
  • 1 Medical Center Manager - appointed by the Nursing Cabinet
  • 3-4 Clinician IIIs - from a variety of regions, appointed by the Central Panel Chair

Members serve a minimum of a 2-year term, with no more than half the membership rotating off at one time.

Continuous Improvement Feedback

Both applicants and panelists are encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences while participating in the Clinical Career Ladder process. Their perspectives provide valuable input to help the PNSO enhance Ladder processes.
