Welcome to the guide for the University of Virginia Health System's Professional Nursing Staff Organization Clinical Career Ladder.
We are proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Clinical Career Ladder at UVAHS! The Ladder was initiated at UVA in 1988 and is based on Patricia Benner's work From Novice to Expert published in 1984. Major revisions to the Ladder occurred in 2002. These revisions included developing both a clinically-based arm of the Ladder and an advanced practice arm. In addition, the behaviors for all levels were reviewed and revised where necessary. The Ladder continues to evolve based on nursing feedback and the needs of the organization, with a new revision effort underway in 2008.
The decision to pursue advancement beyond the entry level is an individual choice based on interest in professional development, increased responsibility and accountability.

Ladder Overview - the basic design and roles of the Clinical Career Ladder
Role Behaviors - in-depth expectations regarding each level's professional behaviors; these are integrated in clinicians' job descriptions and performance appraisals, as well as being core to the initial advancement process.
Advancement & Revalidation Process - Advancement is the annual peer-review process by which clinicians may advance to a higher clinical level; Revalidation is the peer-review process in which Advanced Practice Nurses revalidate their level of practice every three years.
Important Dates - due dates and timelines for the Advancement and Revalidation processes.
Policies & Procedures - a comprehensive realignment of existing policies was completed in 2005; a new user-friendly version is available.
Panel Members - membership of the panels conducting the Advancement and Revalidation processes: the Central Panel (for Advanced Practice roles) and several Clinician III Panels (for advancement to Clinician III roles).
Examples of Portfolio Development Materials - Samples of exemplars and curricula vitae are posted for clinicians' reference in developing their own portfolios.
