Joint Replacement

Quanjun Cui, MD, Brings Expertise in Hip Disorders

Quanjun Cui, MD, a fellowship-trained joint replacement and arthroplasty surgeon, has joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Division of Adult Reconstruction at the University of Virginia Health System. A board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Cui joined UVA in 2006 and has extensive experience in joint reconstruction, replacements and orthopaedic trauma surgery. He has also performed internationally recognized research on avascular necrosis of the hip.

cuiAlong with minimally invasive total hip and knee replacements and revisions, Cui’s specialties include treating patients with avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head. He uses a patient’s own bone marrow stem cells to treat osteonecrosis while performing surgery. He also performs surgical hip dislocations for treatment of femoroacetabular impingement and has extensive experience performing osteotomies, especially periacetabular osteotomies to preserve the hips of patients with acetabular dysplasia.

“We have all the latest surgical technology and we’re on the forefront of new procedures here at UVA,” Cui says.

Leading-edge options available include minimally invasive procedures and computer-assisted navigation systems for hip and knee replacements that use infrared trackers on the patient’s anatomy and surgical instruments for accurate alignment.

Patients also benefit from a multidisciplinary treatment team. Nurse coordinators teach classes weekly for hip and knee replacement patients, and patients receive a discharge and rehabilitation plan prior to their procedure, Cui says. Patients with comorbidities will have UVA specialists in those areas as part of their treatment team. Patients can access UVA physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers and home health workers as well as a rehabilitation hospital.

“We have a well-established team with a long history of providing quality care,” Cui says. “Patients’ needs and satisfaction are our top priority.”
