2009 Young Scientist Award
The University of Virginia Housestaff Council proudly announces the housestaff recipients of the 2009 Young Scientist Award. These $500 awards were created to encourage housestaff members in their academic pursuits conducting clinical or basic science research and to assist in defraying the costs of research activities or travel to scientific meetings. Funding for these awards originated from the UVA Discharge-by-Noon initiative.
This year, there were 36 excellent submissions for this award. We had initially planned on awarding ten scholarships, however due to the outstanding nature of the applications, we have extended this to twelve.
Congratulations to the 2009 Young Scientist Award recipients:

Due to the growing popularity of Macintosh computers in my department, and non-support of these computers by UVa HS/CS, I wrote an article outlining how to set up basic hospital functionality (PACS, Carecast, etc.) on a MAC. See the downloadable documents below.

Grocery & Meal Prep Service

I'm one of the new surgery interns and finding it very difficult to find time to get groceries and cook anything resembling a balanced meal in the evenings. I found a woman who would be willing to deliver prepared meals to the hospital that you could heat up at home if there were enough of us interested. See her reply below. If you're interested, just let me know.
Hi Anna,
I would be more than happy to do this if you could possibly get 7-10 people to sign up too. The meals would be delivered in a 2 week supply, 5 meals per week with large portions. All meals would be vacuum packed and reheated by putting in boiling water until warm through (usually 5 minutes). This is a French technique called sous-vide cooking. You would need to thaw out your meals in the fridge for 1 day before reheating them. You could reheat from the frozen state, but it would take 15 minutes or so. All the freshness is maintained and the quality is perfect. The cost would be 6.50 per meal and would end up costing 130.00 per month. I would deliver the meals frozen, to the hospital every two weeks. I would send each of you preference sheets where you would choose meats, fish, veggies etc. that you prefer. All the food would be all natural and organic when possible. I hope this can work for you.
Heidi
