Financial Aid Timeline

Spring:

  • Complete and submit your financial aid application documents for the next academic year.  These documents include the FAFSA, the UVA School of Medicine application, and all signed tax returns and W2s.  If you're not sure whose information to submit, please see our How To Apply page.Rotunda in Spring
  • We recommend that you complete your FAFSA by March 15th, to ensure that the information is transmitted to the UVA School of Medicine by the priority application deadlines.
  • Incoming first-year students should submit their application by April 1st and will receive a preliminary financial aid award letter by May 1st.
  • Students offered admission after Feb. 1 should submit their application within 30 days of acceptance.  Those still waiting for an offer of admission on March 1 are encouraged to submit their FAFSA and tax returns so that they can then do the UVA financial aid application and be evaluated quickly once they receive an offer.
  • Returning students should submit their application by April 15th to ensure timely processing of their financial aid.

Summer:

  • Stay in touch!  Make sure you keep your address updated in SIS so that we can contact you.  The student bears the full responsibility for any consequences resulting from University communications misdirected or not received because of an incorrect address.
  • You will receive a preliminary award letter 4-8 weeks after your application file is complete.  Read this letter carefully for instructions on how to accept the different parts of your financial aid package.
  • The preliminary award letter will contain instructions for requesting loan funds.  For help determining how much loan money you may need to request, you can complete our Budget Worksheet, or talk with your financial aid counselor.
  • If you are a first-time borrower, be sure to sign a Master Promissory Note with your lender.
  • Official award letters will be mailed in July.
  • Student Accounts will email students regarding their online tuition bills in mid-July.  Most students, if they have completed their financial aid on time, will see their financial aid reflected on their tuition bill.  However, if your tuition bill does not include your financial aid, then the amount of aid indicated for fall on your official award letter may be subtracted from your tuition bill.
  • Fall tuition is due in August.

During the school year:The Lawn in Fall

  • If your financial aid exceeds the amount of tuition and fees, you will receive the excess in equal disbursements for the fall and spring semesters.  The disbursements generally occur within 1-2 weeks after final registration, near the end of August and the end of January.
  • Check your email and our What's New page for important announcements about seminars, upcoming events, and interest rates.
  • Your counselor is always available to discuss money management, budgeting, financial emergencies, aid adjustments - and any other financial issues that may arise.
  • You may apply for aid or adjust the amount of your aid (up to your Cost of Attendance) until March.
