Federal Stafford Loan Program

FEDERAL STAFFORD STUDENT LOANS

  • Application Procedure: All applicants for the Federal Stafford Loan must complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) and the University of Virginia Financial Aid Application.  A separate Federal Stafford Loan Request Form will be enclosed with the preliminary award estimate our office will send you. You must complete and return this form indicating the amount you wish to borrow before our office can process your loan request.
  • Disbursement: The Federal Stafford Loan funds will be credited directly toward payment of tuition and fees in two equal installments (August and January). If your tuition and fees have already been paid, or your financial aid proceeds overpay your account, the overpayment residual will be refunded to you after final registration.
Deadlines: Although Federal Stafford loan requests may be submitted to our office well into each academic year, you should return your orange Federal Loan Request Form to our office by July 1 if you intend to use the loan proceeds as payment towards fall semester's tuition and fee charges.

The University of Virginia is lender-neutral.  We do not have a preferred lender list.  Borrowers should select their own Federal Stafford Loan lender and notify the financial aid office of their choice on the Federal Loan Request Form.  Please see our "Borrower's Guide to Lender Selection" for some tips on how to choose a Stafford lender.

All new borrowers must complete a Master Promissory note with their selected lender.  If you are returning student who has completed a Master Promissory Note before, and you do not wish to change your lender, then you do not need to do it again.
